Observation Narrative
Plot location: slopes above Catawba Creek on SE flank of Cedar Ridge.
The plot is associated in the upslope portion of an exceptional dry calcareous forest/woodland that appears to cover the eastern flank of Cedar Ridge. Composition, physiognomy, and canopy closure are quite variable. In downslope portions, dense clones of herbaceous mesophytes such as Jeffersonia diphylla and Hybanthus concolor are prevalent, while upslope, a more patchy and xerophytic herb layer prevails. Although not large by absolute standards, some of the gnarled Quercus muhlenbergii, Carya ovata, and Juniperus virginiana var. virginiana could be quite old. Other than a few cut cedar stumps, there is a little evidence of recent disturbance here.
